After contemplating a defeating trip back home on the subway, we decided that despite the obstacles facing us, we needed to accomplish this impossible task and find the freaking fabric. So, Teppy popped a happy pill and I put on my game face, and we tackled each floor one at a time I had left my camera at home that day knowing I needed free hands to carry fabric. I am a bit bummed about that, because I have no photo memories of the experience. Anyhow, after about an hour, Teppy discovered a corner of the 3rd floor where we found the exact kind of fabric we were looking for! At first, we weren't sure how to communicate, especially when we discovered that there was no wi-fi in the place and we were going to heavily rely on Google Translate and a translation app I had. That fleeting moment of panic quickly subsided when we discovered that all vendors were schooled in 3 magic words: how much yard? They all had little calculator and could show us. It couldn't have been easier! I was so impressed with the way Teppy and I overcame our fear that day. We were extremely handicapped by language, not knowing where the hell we were, and sifting through 5 floors of endless merchants only to come out victorious and proud of ourselves for not giving up. When is Seoul, don't be afraid to try new things and just "go for it!" You never know when you are going to get back, so seize the day. Ahjummas Hwighting!
Teppy and I hit Dongdaemun Market late in our trip in order to buy fabric for our step mom who wanted to make us quilts. We weren't prepared for the enormity of Dongdaemun Market's 5 story fabric building. The entire Dongdaemun Market area is so massive that one might consider spending an entire week there to truly get to know it. I was there 3 times during my visit to Seoul, and I still have no clue how to get around that place. It is a crazy ass hot mess of people, vendors, and dudes on motorbikes.
